From where? The phrase is not a true request for information but a courtly opening formula. In administrative and legal Hebrew contexts, a superior addresses a subordinate with such questions to elicit a formal report or accounting.

The question establishes God's sovereign position and the Adversary's subordinate role. God is not inquiring but inviting testimony.

To rove, to roam, to patrol. The root conveys purposeful, systematic movement across territory. The Covenant Rendering renders it 'roaming' to capture the sense of comprehensive surveillance rather than aimless wandering.

The verb establishes the Adversary's role as an observer and inspector of human affairs. He is not idle but actively monitoring the earth.

To walk about, to go back and forth, to traverse. The hitpael form (reflexive) suggests continuous, repetitive movement. Combined with shut, it emphasizes relentless mobility and observation.

This verb pair echoes the description of divine agents in other biblical accounts and establishes the Adversary's presence throughout human experience. He is everywhere Job has built his world.

Literally, 'have you set your heart upon'—meaning to focus attention on, to observe carefully, to consider deliberately. This is not casual glancing but intentional, sustained notice.

The phrase indicates that God is asking the Adversary to pay special attention, to regard Job with the seriousness he deserves. It is an invitation to examine Job closely, which the Adversary will do, and in doing so, will mount his challenge.

My servant. In Hebrew Bible usage, avdi ('servant of the LORD') is applied to figures of great honor and responsibility—Moses (Numbers 12:7), David (2 Samuel 7:5), the prophets, and the Suffering Servant of Isaiah. The term indicates covenant relationship, obedience, and divine trust.

God's use of this title claims Job and asserts his place within the covenant community. It also means God takes responsibility for Job's reputation and virtue. By calling him 'my servant,' God stakes part of his own honor on Job's integrity.

Complete, whole, blameless, upright. The word does not mean sinless but rather integrated, undivided in loyalty, wholehearted in devotion. In covenant language, tam describes someone whose heart is single toward God.

To hedge, to fence, to cover, to protect. The noun sakh is a thorn hedge or protective barrier. The image is of a fortified boundary protecting the person and property within from outside threats.

The hedge is not merely metaphorical but a real structure that provided protection in the ancient world. Job's 'hedge' is both literal (his wealth, his servants who guard his property) and spiritual (God's providential care). The verb's use here establishes that God is actively maintaining this protection.

From all around, on every side, in a complete circle. The phrase emphasizes total, comprehensive protection with no gaps or weak points.

The completeness of the hedge means Job has nowhere to feel vulnerable. This totality makes the Adversary's challenge more pointed: can Job accept the complete removal of this protection?

To break out, to burst through, to spread abundantly. The word is used of water breaking through a dam, fire spreading, or growth exceeding all bounds. It conveys overflow and abundance.

The verb suggests not merely prosperity but explosive, almost uncontainable increase. Job's wealth is not modest; it is abundant beyond normal expectation. This makes the later loss even more catastrophic.

To stretch out, to extend, to send forth. In the context of divine action, it means to exercise direct agency. The phrase 'stretch out your hand' (shelach yadekha) is used for the plagues of Exodus and other direct divine interventions.

The Adversary is not asking God to permit suffering indirectly but to cause it directly. This heightens the theological stakes: God is being asked to become the active agent of Job's destruction.

To touch, to strike, to afflict. The root is used throughout the Hebrew Bible for plague and disease. To 'touch' someone is to strike them with affliction.

In your hand, in your power, under your control. The phrase transfers agency and operational authority to the recipient. To place something 'in the hand' of another means to give them power over it.

The transfer is not passive permission but active authority. The Adversary does not merely have permission to try Job; he is given actual power to act and to destroy within his purview.

Only, nothing but, except, alone. The word introduces an exception or limitation to what preceded it.

The single word raq creates the boundary that contains the Adversary's authority. It is the hinge word of the verse—everything before it is permitted, everything after it is forbidden.

Do not stretch out your hand, do not lay hands on, do not touch. The negative command uses the same verb (shelach) that the Adversary used to demand action; God uses it to set a boundary.

The phrase 'vayyehi hayyom' (and there was a day) is narrative shorthand for 'a significant moment arrived.' In biblical narrative, whenever this phrase appears, something pivotal is about to happen. It connects this earthly scene directly to the heavenly council of verse 6, where 'the day came' when the divine beings presented themselves before YHWH. Commonly translated 'young men,' but the term can encompass all the children—sons and daughters. It suggests both physical rising (he was likely sitting when the messenger arrived) and the gathering of oneself to face overwhelming news. Qara' means 'to tear, rend.' The me'il is not a simple garment but the outer robe worn by persons of status—the same word used for Samuel's robe (1 Samuel 2:19) and the priestly ephod. Tearing it is a formal, recognized act of mourning in ancient Semitic cultures, attested in Ugaritic literature and Egyptian texts. The repetition of vayyippol creates a theological irony: what the Adversary's agents did violently to Job's servants (they fell), Job now does voluntarily before God. He casts himself down before the One who has permitted this loss.

The Hishtaphel (intensive reflexive) of shachah, 'to bow, prostrate oneself.' This is the most physically embodied form of worship in Hebrew—not a word or a thought, but the human body pressed flat against the earth before God. The verb appears in the Septuagint as proskyneō, the Greek term for deepest reverence and worship.

Literally 'naked, bare, exposed.' In Genesis 2:25, Adam and Eve are arom ('naked') before the Fall—a state of innocence and lack of shame. After eating from the tree, they experience nakedness as exposure and vulnerability. Job's use of the word invokes both meanings: humans are born in innocence and nakedness, and death returns us to that elemental state. The most common Hebrew verb for 'to give.' It emphasizes volition and agency—the giver actively transfers something to the receiver. In the phrase YHWH natan ('the LORD gave'), the action is attributed wholly to God as the source and agent of all abundance.

By using natan, Job frames all his possessions as gifts, not acquisitions. He did not earn his wealth; God gave it. This reframes the loss: one does not lose a gift in the same way one loses something earned or owned. Gifts are inherently conditional and revocable.

To take, seize, receive. The same verb appears throughout Genesis for taking wives, taking livestock, taking possession. YHWH laqach—places both verbs under the same agent and in the same grammatical construction, making them equally valid expressions of God's will.

Job does not use a verb of theft, theft, or destruction (gazel, 'to rob'). He uses laqach, the neutral verb of taking. This suggests that God's taking is as legitimate as His giving. The Covenant Rendering preserves this neutrality and theological significance.

Barak means both 'to bless' and 'to curse' (euphemistically), depending on context. The root idea is to speak words of power and authority that shape reality. When God blesses, He grants abundance and fertility (Genesis 1:22). When humans bless God, they affirm His goodness and power. The Adversary predicted that Job would barak ('curse') God to His face; instead, Job uses the same verb to barak ('bless') God's name.

The wordplay—Job blesses where he was predicted to curse—is the crux of the scene. The same verb, inverted in direction. Job's choice to bless rather than curse is not merely a response to suffering; it is the refusal of the Adversary's prediction. Job affirms that no circumstance—not even the loss of his entire family—can make him revoke his blessing of God's name.

The Covenant Rendering uses 'blameless' to capture the sense of moral completeness. The word does not mean 'without any flaw' in the modern sense but rather 'whole, undivided in loyalty to God.' To speak, to say; also the word/thing spoken. The phrase 'ein dover davar elav' literally means 'there was not one speaking a word to him'—total negation of speech. The repetition of the root dabar (speak/word) twice emphasizes the completeness of the silence.

To terrify, to frighten, to cause to tremble. The verb personifies the day as capable of experiencing terror.

To remove something from mispar (the count, the number, the reckoning) is to remove it from the entire order of creation. The verb orer emphasizes that Leviathan is asleep or dormant—contained by God's power—and Job is asking these sorcerers to wake it. The great sea serpent, the primordial monster of chaos in ancient Near Eastern mythology. In Hebrew scripture, Leviathan is the embodiment of cosmic disorder, the creature that existed before God's creative order.

Leviathan appears throughout scripture (Psalm 74:14; Isaiah 27:1; Job 40-41) as the supreme symbol of that which resists creation and order. By invoking those who can rouse Leviathan, Job is asking for the unleashing of the anti-creation force itself. It is the Leitmotif of human existence in his understanding—not accidental pain but fundamental suffering that characterizes mortality. The word can mean labor (as in work) or suffering (as in anguish), suggesting that for Job, these are inseparable. To exist is to toil, to suffer, to labor against the weight of being alive. Why? For what reason? The interrogative form seeking explanation or justification.

This will become Job's signature word throughout the book—the recurring question that marks his struggle. Where the psalm-maker asks 'How long?' Job asks 'Why?'—demanding not temporal relief but cosmic explanation. From the womb, from the belly, from birth. Rechem is the womb.

Strength or might—primarily physical or military power. It denotes the capability to overcome resistance. In divine contexts, it describes God's ability to accomplish his will regardless of opposition. The Hebrew root suggests overcoming, breaking through, conquering.

Gevurah without restraint is what terrifies Job. Strength without wisdom could be chaos; strength WITH wisdom but without visible moral concern is something worse—a universe governed by power that answers to no external standard.

Counsel, advice, or plan—the deliberative dimension of wisdom. It refers to the ability to form and execute strategic purpose. Unlike chokhmah (intuitive wisdom), etsah is counsel that flows from deliberation.

God possesses not only the wisdom to see what ought to be, but the counsel (the deliberative plan) to accomplish it. The question is whether that counsel aligns with human concepts of justice.

To demolish, tear down, destroy completely. The root (haras) denotes violent destruction—the kind that reduces a structure to ruins. It's used of razing cities, breaking walls, utterly destroying what was built. The imperfect form (yaharos) suggests habitual or characteristic action: 'he tears down' as a defining activity.

This is not gentle correction but utter devastation. The Covenant Rendering renders it 'tears down,' capturing the violence inherent in the Hebrew. Job is not speaking of pruning or refining but of total destruction.

God's wisdom is not merely intellectual but effectual—it achieves what it intends. So if God permits deception, it is not from ignorance or powerlessness but from effective will. The word choice makes God's knowledge of deception intentional.

One who goes astray, who wanders, who errs. The root (shagag) denotes going off the path, missing the mark, being led away. It can refer to unintentional error but also to being led into error by another.

The shogeg is not necessarily morally culpable (hence 'deceived') but is nonetheless lost and led astray. The status of being deceived places one in a subordinate position to the deceiver.
